PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -
The body of a man was found inside a Prescott Valley apartment after his two children spent hours throwing items off a second-story balcony, police said.
Although it's not clear exactly why the two youngsters were throwing cans, knives and other things, the pair might have been trying to get someone's attention, said Prescott Valley police Sgt. Brandon Bonney.
When officers arrived at the complex in the 3800 block of Teri Court Sunday evening, the children wouldn't let them through the door, Bonney said.
Police were able to enter through a window. Once inside, they discovered the body of the children's 31-year-old father. It's not known how long he had been dead.
The 3-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl apparently fed themselves fruit snacks, Bonney said.
The cause and manner of death are under investigation. Bonney said authorities suspect that drugs could have contributed to the father's death.
The children are in the care of Child Protective Services.
