SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Mid-Michigan's most wanted man could be back in our area within the next 30 days. Michael Lawrence waived his extradition hearing in Las Vegas Tuesday. Meanwhile, one of the other men accused in Jones' death will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Levonne Greer was sentenced Tuesday.
Saginaw police say Lawrence, wanted in connection to the homicides of a young girl in 2012 and his girlfriend in 2013, has been captured in Las Vegas, NV, by the Michigan State Police fugitive team and FBI.
Saginaw police Sgt. Reggie Williams said Michael Duane Lawrence has been lodged and booked in the Clark County Jail and is awaiting transport back to Michigan where he will face charges.
"This has been a yearlong effort and a great collaboration between law enforcement and community," said Williams in a news release. "This could not have happened without constant tips coming in and the involvement of multiple law enforcement agencies in various states. We can only hope that this capture and arrest will bring some peace to the grieving families."
Lawrence had been a wanted man in connection to the murder of 6-year-old Layla Jones and the homicide of his girlfriend, Angelica Olivarez. Layla was killed during a shooting just over a year ago in Saginaw. Then in mid-April of 2013, police were called to a home in Saginaw after Olivarez's 3-year-old son, whom she fathered with Lawrence, was found wandering the streets by a neighbor after his mother was killed and is believed to have been left alone for hours following her death.
In July, another man, JeVonne Greer, was convicted on 18 felony counts including murder, in the shooting death of Layla. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He was sentenced Tuesday. Greer expressed condolenses to Jones' family. But, he says he will be appeal the jury's guilty verdict. Prosecutors say Greer, Lawrence and two others carried out the drive-by shooting to get revenge for another person's death.
