300 jobs lost with closing of Norwalk company

Posted: Updated:
NORWALK, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Norwalk company that's been around for decades has announced it's closing its doors, and 300 people will be out of work.

Residents and leaders in Norwalk say losing Janesville Acoustics is devastating for the city.

"I'm not mad, I'm heartbroken," said Joseph Blake, who has worked at Janesville since he was 18.

Blake just celebrated his 18th year with the company. Two days later, they announced the closure.

"You just want to keep working," Blake said. "You just want to go see the people you see every day…and that won't happen anymore."

Janesville Acoustics make automobile instillation and sound-deadening equipment for all car manufacturers across the world, including the Toledo Jeep plant.

Union leaders gathered Friday to discuss the next steps. Workers United Vice President Richard Monje says they have to ask themselves, ‘What are we doing in this country?'

"What is the end result of the continued decline of the wages and benefits and salaries of working people that have built this country?" he asked. "What is it going to mean to our service sector? What does it mean for just about everything we know America to be?"

Janesville officials say the plan is to establish a new facility in Nebraska, Kansas or Missouri. The phase-out begins this fall, and the plant will shut its doors by the end of 2014. City leaders, however, say they will fight to keep it open.
