BACK TO SCHOOL

Summer break officially over

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The summer break is officially over and kids all across Mid-Michigan are heading back to school.

Things will be a bit different for students who were once part of the Saginaw Buena Vista school district. You might remember that the district has closed down and students have been transferred to neighboring districts. Most were transitioned to either Saginaw Public School or Bridgeport schools but some are now attending Frankenmuth or Reese schools.

Students at Flint Powers Catholic High School will begin the year on a whole new campus Tuesday. They will move into their new location, sharing a campus with the Michigan School for the Deaf near the corner of Miller and Hammberberg roads.

Work on the new location began last year and was completed earlier this summer.

Schools in the area have also been revamping their safety plans ever since the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut back in December. You can be sure school safety will at the forefront.

Here are some things that you can do to get your child ready for returning to school.

  • If your child walks to school, make sure they walk on a street that has a sidewalk. If their is no sidewalk available, make sure children walk facing the traffic.
  • If your child bikes to school, make sure they a properly equipped with a safety helmet. Ride on the right side of the road.
  • If your child rides the bus, make sure they know the route to take to get to the bus stop. Make sure they stand at least six feet away from the curb.
  • Remember that an overstuffed backpack can also cause injury. The backpack should not equal no more than 10 to 20 percent of a child's body weight.
  • For drivers, make sure your aware that school buses will be on the roads. It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
  • Also, be alert as children can be quite unpredictable.
