Randi (far left) accepting an award before her diagnosis
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
A local teen is dealing with a rare bone cancer. So rare, in fact, that is affects just one in 2 million kids.
A benefit for Randi is only two days away, and they still have plenty of seats left. They're hoping you can help!
For 16-year-old Randi Idleman, the past two months have been a blur of doctors visits and chemo therapy.
The Director of Services at the Dream Center says there's "more than meets the eye" when it comes to Randi.
Yes, she's a typical teen, who loves Twilight and goes to high school.
But unlike most teens, Randi has to squeeze in classes between trips to Indy to get chemo.
She says a few months ago she started feeling pain in her knee. At first she thought she had injured it.
But on June 19th Randi got a diagnosis that changed her life. Doctors told her she had a rare bone cancer that was affecting her knee.
After two months of chemo, Randi is now prepping for an operation to get the rest of the tumor out.
Between the chemo, other medicines and weekly trips to Indy, the costs are adding up.
Especially now that Randi is about to have an operation.
"My mom will be off for six or seven weeks with out pay, so we're just trying to make sure that everything stays rolling," says Samantha, Randi's sister.
Samantha is organizing a benefit dinner at the Dream Center this Thursday at 6 p.m., but only two days out from the dinner, she's getting a little nervous.
"We were wanting to sell 200 tickets, only sold 20, we've already got all the food donated, and just want to get that going," says Samantha.
They will raffle prizes from Rogers Jewelers, Escalade Sports and other businesses.
Food will be catered from Gabe's Famous Fried Chicken.
As for Randi, she's on track to graduate with honors, but the diagnosis has changed her perspective.
"I used to do that too, I used to complain about stupid stuff. It's hard to explain, but these kids are out living their normal lives and I'm stuck in a little bubble in my house because I can't go anywhere. It's good and bad. It's a wake up call, that's for sure," says Randi.
Randi's family has several fund raisers planned for this month, before Randi gets her operation.
On Tuesday September 24th, for example, you can eat out at Hacienda to help out.
Twenty percent of all Hacienda's west side profits for the day will go toward Rally for Randi. However, you'll have to have a "Hacienda Gives Back" ticket for that event.
You can get those tickets by calling Samantha at 812-431-0790.
Saturday, September 28th they will have an event at Howell Park from noon until 9 p.m.
If you want to volunteer for the event, you can call Cheryl at 812-549-5483.
To pre-resigter for the event, call Tod at 812-549-5371.
There will be lots of food (think polish sausage, burgers hot dogs, etc) and games (Horse shoe tournament, Corn Hole tournament etc.)
They will also be playing bingo and giving away prizes. If you want to donate prizes, call Cheryl.
