People using Craigslist to sell items has become a fairly common thing to do, but it's a bit alarming to see what some are trying to sell on the site.
A quick search on Craigslist in several cities and people can find plenty of expecting moms hoping to cash in on their condition by selling positive pregnancy tests to anyone who is willing to pay up.
"...if you are in need of a positive pregnancy test I can provide one (or more) for you," said one Craigslist posting out of Manhattan in New York City.
The average price of the positive tests start at $20 and goes up from there.
But there is civil liability and there could be criminal liability as well.
Legal Analyst Paul Henderson for CBS San Francisco station KPIX 5 said the sellers of positive pregnancy tests probably aren't going to jail, unless someone used their tests in a fraud or blackmail and they knew about it.
"That person that's selling the test - if they are participating as part of that scam - then they would be liable as well," Henderson said.
"It's like any other con, and cons are no good and they never result in anything positive - a con is a con," said Nancy Volpe.
Local police are worried the sales could make their way to the Kansas City metro and be used for deceitful practices.
"For example, if a married man is having an affair and he tried to break it off with the girl, and she became upset and decided to present this fake pregnancy test and demand money, otherwise she would tell the spouse. That would be a level of blackmail," said Overland Park police Officer Gary Mason.
Some posts said their purpose is for pranks, while other examples being passed around the internet include tricking a man into marriage or, at the very least, trying to keep a partner in a relationship they no longer want to be a part of.
"I thought it was ridiculous," said Andrew Kent when he heard about the sales. "I still don't think it's right - that's playing with people's emotions. That's a real-life situation and you don't mess with stuff like that."
"If it's a prank I think it's hysterical, but it can be really cold-hearted and mean and I wouldn't want to be part of it," said Brian Dostal when told about the advertisements.
Some Craigslist posts even showed the sellers were willing to go above and beyond just selling a positive test.
"I will also be willing to bottle my urine if you need to seal the deal that way," wrote someone out of the Philadelphia area.
An Overland Park, KS, ad read, "This is becoming very popular ... I am 8 weeks pregnant selling positive pregnancy tests!! If you wanna prank someone or even trap a man into marriage ... please feel free to email or text Amber."
KCTV5 sent a text to the phone number and the receiver wrote back and insisted she's never posted anything on Craigslist. Soon after the ad was removed.
