Animal shelter ends 'no kill' policy

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Genesee county commissioners have voted to make a policy change by ending the county animal shelter's "no kill" policy.

The policy was in effect for less than two months.

Under the old policy, animals could only be put-down if a veterinarian or court ordered such a move.

The new policy allows for euthanizing animals either at the request of owners, or for what they call "humane reasons" like injury or public health concerns.

Four-thousand animals were euthanized at the facility in 2012.
