The lawyer for a man accused of stabbing a sheriff's deputy several times in the neck and carjacking a motorist in Detroit says his client has a history of mental illness.
Defense attorney James Howarth told The Associated Press Monday that 25-year-old Derreck White suffers from hallucinations. Howarth says White wouldn't have acted this way "in his right mind" and "something is very wrong."
White's Monday morning escape prompted a courthouse lockdown and a manhunt.
Court records say White was scheduled to learn his punishment after last month's conviction on carjacking, armed robbery and firearms charges.
Authorities say White had a plastic comb fashioned into a shank. The deputy is expected to survive.
Police say White stole a minivan nearby and later abandoned that vehicle on the city's east side.
