CHINLE, AZ (CBS5) -
Two Arizona counties hit hard by flooding this month are getting financial aid.
Gov. Jan Brewer signed a Declaration of Emergency for Apache and Greenlee counties on Friday.
Last week flooding washed out Blue Road near the Arizona-New Mexico border.
Heavy rainfall caused crews to close Blue Road, also known as Greenlee County Road 67004, and Campbell Blue bridge just north of Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The Blue River runs from Alpine, AZ, in Apache County to the San Francisco River near Clifton, AZ, in Greenlee County. Once it's dry again, Greenlee and Apache County dozers will come in and a bridge will be rebuilt.
"Longtime area residents said they have never seen the rivers so high as the Blue and the Campbell Blue rivers were this weekend," Alpine District Ranger Rick Davalos said.
No one was hurt.
Mud, rain, mold and infestation from the flooding forced many Navajo Nation families to sleep outside.
Navajo Division of Health spokesperson Sonlatsa Jim-Martin said there were at least 50 houses within the flash flood areas and many families had to leave their homes.
The Navajo Nation opened a shelter in Chinle to help the flood victims. Volunteers from the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter came to provide food, and bottled water, as well as cots and blankets to the dozens who had to leave their homes.
Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higherground. Do not wait for instructions to move. [See Flash Flood Alerts]
Be aware of stream, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or without typical warnings such as rain clouds or heavy rain.
Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly.
Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams, rivers or creeks, particularly during threatening conditions.
