A giant black bear is not what Micki Davis expected to find hanging out on her porch Tuesday night. Imagine her surprise when she found three more cubs underneath her deck.
"I was face to face with a bear," Davis said. "She was real big and, I'm sure, she looked bigger at the time because I was real scared."
Davis has three dogs in her Cleveland, GA, home. All of them, except for the dachshund, barked and chased the bear.
"Mr. Bentley, who is the dachshund, was in the yard and deterred the bear," Davis said.
It wasn't until the next day that Davis realized the angry bear was protecting three cubs.
"She was very protective, but of course, I didn't know she was being protective. I thought she was being mean, but evidently all her three babies were down under the deck," Davis said.
The night before Davis ran outside making loud noises and tried to scare the bear off. It had little effect.
"She just came back and stayed with her cubs," Davis said.
On Wednesday, Davis said all of the bears stayed in a tree until after dark then they climbed down and took over her porch.
"They were just hanging out, walking around," Davis said.
All three of her dogs stood guard inside the home barking at the bears as they passed by the window.
"It was scary," Davis said. "I couldn't get animal control to do anything. They told me, Saturday starts bow season on bears, and they could not come out and use the drug to put them to sleep in order to move them and relocate them. I kept saying 'why can't you come out and do something for me? I can't let my dogs out, I am here by myself. What am I going to do? They may not leave.'"
The bears hopped a fence Wednesday night and they haven't been seen since. Davis said the mother was very protective of her cubs.
But, Davis will be protective of her dogs if it comes down to that.
"It's scary, I'll have my gun ready and if I have to I would definitely shoot," Davis said. "It would be tough, really hard to do - kill the momma bear. I don't think it will come to that."
