The Clare County Sheriff's department says corrections officers responded to an attempted suicide in the county jail on Thursday.

The officers were notified of the attempt by another inmate around 4:30 p.m. Authorities said a 42-year-old male inmate had attempted to hang himself with his bed sheet.

Clare County John Wilson said staff initiated CPR and other treatments were administered by MMR ambulance paramedics. The inmate was taken to a hospital where he remains listed in critical condition.

Wilson said the inmate, who he declined to identify, is a federal inmate that has been in the Clare County Jail for three weeks due to drug offense charges.

No further information was released.
