Pastor James Squires
RADCLIFF, KY (WAVE) - For almost 40 years Pastor James Squires had not seen or heard from his father until he got word he had recently been arrested in Tampa, Florida.
Squires, a pastor in Radcliff at Abundant Life Church, believed his father has a mental condition and that's why he walked out on his family.
"He had a framing company and I worked for him as a young boy then and he went to the insurance company lady to pay the workman's comp and he never come home. Didn't take no money, no clothes, nothing," he said.
Squires went to Florida with his father's photo in his hand. He visited several homeless shelters hoping someone had seen his dad, Bobby Squires.
Someone did recognize the man in the picture, leading Squires to where his father may be.
In Bradenton, Florida, in a shopping center parking lot, that's where he found him.
"'I've followed you for 38 years but I've missed you.' And then I said, 'I'm your son.' And he looked at me and we just went on and talked."
Squires said his dad told him his mind snapped 38 years ago and that is why he left the family for the streets.
"He wept two or three times during the time I told him who I was. You could see the tears come down his eyes."
Squires said he wasn't able to persuade his father to come home this time, "I just said, 'Dad, we're here. If you need anything, if you get down medically or going someplace, you let me know and I will come and get you.'"
Squires said he is glad to know his father is alive and ok he's glad to know his dad's alive and ok.
