Laura Bush visits Georgia Southern

Former First Lady Laura Bush spoke to Georgia Southern students and others about the challenges of being the wife of a president and the adjustments of life after that.

She told those inside a jam-packed Hanner Field House she faced an initial struggle to find her identity as the president's wife. Instead of modeling herself after one of several former first ladies, she strived to be herself.

She also recalled being on Capitol Hill on September 11th during the crashes into the World Trade Center. She was in the office of Senator Ted Kennedy, her husband's unlikely ally in education reform, before she was to testify on childhood literacy.

Mrs. Bush talked about finally reuniting with her husand later that evening at the White House after his travels for the day were detoured as a safety precaution.

Her most vivid memory, she said, was a month later as her husband prepared to throw out the first pictch of the World Series in Yankees Stadium. She described how President Bush talked onto the field, alone and vulnerable to any possible attacker, and helped ceremoniously move the country forward.

Since leaving office, she outlined some of the causes the Bush's have champoined through Bush Institute since leaving office. Her visit was part of the university's lecture series.
