A man is still on the loose, hours after authorities say he approached a 16-year-old girl at a bus stop.
The girl's mother tells us that on Tuesday, a man drove up to the bus stop on Highway 110 and County Road 2228, in Whitehouse, approached the girl, told her she was pretty and asked if her parents were home.
"This morning I went up to the bus stop and kind of stayed hidden," Kimberly Groper, the mother, said.
She is a mom who's not taking any chances. After calling the police Tuesday, Groper claims it took more than an hour for a response.
"I knew it was gonna take time, so I knew I had to be the one to catch him," she said.
Wednesday morning, she hid behind a nearby building, gun in hand, waiting for him to come back. Surveillance video from a nearby business caught the van driving up. From another angle, you can watch as Kimberly points a gun at the driver.
"I obviously had my gun on me, wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna get hurt, I think he got a glimpse of the gun and that's what scared him off, I'm a mom," she said.
A white vehicle shown on the surveillance video is being driven by Groper's sister in law. She tried to block him, but he swerved around and sped away.
"I tried to do a chase on him, I tried to get him, but I lost him, because my daughter of course was crying and the bus had stopped and I'm trying to tell her to get on the bus where you're safe, but trying to chase after him, but I lost him in the shuffle."
Her child is frightened, she says, and won't be allowed to go anywhere alone until the man is caught.
She's even keeping that gun right by her side in the car, just in case.
"Thinking about my child's safety and another child, thinking that if he doesn't get her he's gonna get somebody else, you know, if he comes back a second time then obviously he's determined," she said.
Neighbors aren't taking any chances, either.
"That's pretty scary that somebody was that bold on a highway to try to pick somebody up," Amanda Wages, a neighbor and mother of a 16-year-old daughter and two younger ones, said.
"I'll be talking to her, and I'll talk to the little girls about being careful and you know, stranger danger, and all of that."
In this case, Groper's daughter's street smarts may have saved her.
The driver of the van is described as a Hispanic man in his thirties. Though police say they understand family will do anything to protect family, they would like to remind everyone if they see this van to call 911.
