Fake 'Wells Fargo' checks sent to Saginaw residents

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities are warning the public about a potentially harmful scam.

Police inform WNEM.com that business checks from the University of Denver are being sent to residents in the Saginaw area.

The checks arrive bearing the Wells Fargo logo, but the first two reference numbers on the checks are false. The university is aware of the bad checks being sent out. They have no record of these checks being sent out from their financial department.

If you receive one of these checks, you're asked to turn it in to your local police department.

Authorities do warn that ff you knowingly attempt to cash one of these checks and are successful, please note that you will be committing fraud.
