PANOLA COUNTY, TX (KSLA) -
The Panola County Sheriff has identified the Deadwood cafe owner who apparently shot himself Thursday night as deputies attempted to serve him with a warrant.
It happened around 6 p.m. at the Frozen Flamingo Sno Cone and Snack Stand at the intersection of FM 2517 and County Road 444 in the Deadwood community, which is about 15 miles east of Carthage.
According to Sheriff Kevin Lake, investigators had completed a criminal investigation and went to the business to serve a warrant on 32-year-old Timothy Sean Crowley. When they arrived, they called out to him because the lights were off and it was difficult to see into the screened in area.
They discovered that Crowley had locked the doors to the cafe and porch area. While the deputies were trying to speak with him through the screened porch, they say they saw him lunge forward and pull out what appeared to be a handgun from behind his back and turn it on himself.
At that point, deputies forced their way in, and confirmed that the gunshot wound was fatal.
Lake said a .380 handgun along with one spent shell casing were recovered from the scene. Justice of the Peace David Gray was called to the scene to pronounce the man dead, and Hawthorn Funeral Home was called to remove the body shortly after 7 p.m. The body was later transported to the Southwest Forensic Crime Lab in Dallas for an autopsy.
"We regret that the situation ended this way, but are grateful at this point that none else, including the responding officers were additional injured," said Sheriff Lake in a statement released Friday morning.
Lake has not released the charge on the warrant that deputies were attempting to serve on Crowley, but he did confirm to The Panola Watchman that it was for a felony.
