A basketball legend paid a visit to Mid-Michigan on Friday as part of his mission to help inner-city students.

Ervin "Magic" Johnson was at Dow Corning headquarters in Bay County.  He visited the company because it's been a big contributor to the Saginaw Promise Scholarship fund for high school students.

Magic Johnson said in a prepared message delivered Friday that he identifies with inner-city youngsters.

"I think that it's important that you know, first of all, that I give back, because somebody helped me," explained Johnson.

Johnson shared with the group and the youngsters that he had a reading problem when he was a child. A guidance counselor told him he wouldn't be able to go to college unless he went to summer school and brought his reading level up.  Johnson took that advice and he never looked back. He's been a basketball superstar, he's part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and successful businessman. But Magic says he has one major mission in his life at this time.

"The most joy for me is putting people to work, and then giving scholarships to young people," said Johnson. "I have 150 young people on scholarship right now through the Magic Johnson Foundation, college of their choice."

Young people TV5 talked with Friday came away impressed with the legend from Lansing...

"Well, I just appreciate him, because he really is an honest man and he's a man of God, I love that, and I just appreciate him coming back to pour his wisdom on the youth today," said Chris Garrett, a high school student.

"It was very inspirational how he overcame all [these] things and it was very entertaining because he just kept the crowd going and it was very nice," said student Grace Macomber.

Johnson shared with TV5 why he's driven to help the kids. "So that they can hopefully have a successful life in college and then go on and get a job for a corporation like this," explained Johnson.
