COOPER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -

Authorities say a motorcyclist struck a deer in southwestern Michigan, causing crashes that killed the rider as well as another motorist.

The Kalamazoo County sheriff's department says the crashes happened about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in Cooper Township, near Kalamazoo.

The department says 55-year-old motorcyclist Theobald Metzer of Kalamazoo was thrown from the bike and died in the crash. Investigators say his body was shortly afterward hit by the other motorist, 78-year-old Edmund Janke of Otsego, who then crashed.

Earl Vest, who lives nearby, told MLive.com that he heard the crash and came outside to find the motorist's vehicle flipped over. Vest called 911 and emergency workers were there within about 10 minutes. He says it was "just a mess out here."

The road was closed as authorities investigated.
