Slain journalist Daniel Pearl is being honored with a concert and a scholarship in Flint.
Pearl was killed in Pakistan in 2002 while reporting for the Wall Street Journal.
The Flint Jewish Federation will bring Daniel Pearl World Music Day to the University of Michigan-Flint Theater on Oct. 6.
The federation also plans to award a $500 scholarship to a Genesee County high school student who wins an essay contest sponsored by The Flint Journal. The essay contest is open to any high school student who attends school in the county or who lives there. Entrants are asked to answer the question, "Why does journalism matter in today's world?"
The Flint Journal says the contest deadline is on Sunday.
The essay contest winner will be announced at the concert.
