Federal employees in Western MA brace for potential govt. shutdown

Posted: Updated:
CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

Monday night many federal employees are going to bed not knowing if they'll go to work in the morning, many could be furloughed if there is a government shutdown.

Among those affected in Western Mass would be the Springfield Armory which would close because it is a national park.

Head Start, a federally-funded program serving underprivileged pre-school-aged children could also be in trouble.

The shutdown would also hit local military bases.

Lt. Col. James Bishop from Westover Air Reserve base in Chicopee says many at the base would immediately feel the impact.

"Right now what we know is that there are 5,500 people on base at Westover between the active and the reserve and either directly or indirectly this will affect everyone. The shutdown will hurt every aspect of the mission and the people who support that mission," said Bishop.
