Man says 'adrenaline was flowing' when he shot at suspected burglars

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A man shot a burglar and a second suspect wound up crashing just east of the Independence Center Mall following a chase, a Jackson County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said Thursday.

The burglars broke in about 4 p.m., authorities said. The home is in the 40200 block of East Campbell near the Jackson County and Lafayette County line. This is just north of Oak Grove.

The son of the property owner came to the farmhouse and saw it ransacked. He said the burglars had stripped the home of its copper wiring. He noticed a vehicle, and then saw the suspects in bushes.

The man, who only wanted to be identified as Irvin, ordered them to freeze. He told KCTV5 that the suspects jumped in their vehicle and tried to run him over. He then fired two shots toward the tire, but at least one bullet went through the back window and apparently hit the woman.

"I was trying to incapacitate the car at that point," Irvin said. "I was trying to shoot out the tires, shoot out a window. That way the cops knew exactly what to look for if they see a brown Oldsmobile on the road with no windows. The adrenaline was flowing."

The second suspect rushed the injured woman to St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs. After dropping her off, that man, identified in court documents as Michael A. Swatosh, 34, of Butler, MO, fled.

A Jackson County sheriff's deputy was in the area of Interstate 70 and Highway 291 when he spotted the suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near Highway 291 and Interstate 70. A short chase ensued and the suspect vehicle apparently crashed just north of 39th Street.

The sheriff's office took Swatosh into custody.

The woman, Stephanie M. Mickelson, 41, of Maryville, MO, was released from the hospital Friday afternoon and turned over to the custody of sheriff's deputies.

Both Mickelson and Swatosh were charged with one count of first-degree burglary.
