SIERRA VISTA, AZ (CBS5) -

One year ago, Border Patrol Agent Nick Ivie believed he was tracking Mexican drug smugglers.

The five-year veteran stationed near Bisbee responded to a sensor alarm that had gone off near the border.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2012, Ivie thought two other responding Border Patrol agents were smugglers. A shootout unfolded, and Ivie was shot and killed.

Though it's been a year since Ivie's death, his wife Christy says she's still coming to terms with the fact her husband will not return home.

"Sometimes I still wake up in the morning and I have to remind myself that this is my reality," she said.

Ivie said she remembers the morning she heard the knock on her door.

"There were four agents there. They told me there had been a shooting and he had been shot and killed. And it was unbelievable. I just remember saying, 'No, no!' over again."

That shock was soon replaced by disbelief days later, when she learned her husband died after being shot by a fellow Border Patrol agent.

"I think it's harder because I don't have someone to be angry at. I don't have someone to blame. It wasn't a bad guy that he was up against. So that's hard," said Ivie.

Christy Ivie questions the initial reports, which say her husband was the person who fired the first shot. She hopes the Border Patrol will release the full, final report.

"That's what I'm fighting for. I want them to release it, and I want them to release it and tell (everyone) what happened," she said

"He felt threatened and there was a lot of miscommunications that happened," she continued.

However, until that report is released, Christy Ivie is moving forward with her life, raising her two children on her own.

"He was a wonderful father and husband, and he loved spending every second he could with the girls and with me. I think that's what I miss. Just the family life."
