Fired Pinal County investigator paid settlement.

CASA GRANDE, AZ (AP) -

A former chief investigator for the Pinal County Attorney's Office who was fired after County Attorney Lando Voyles took office has received a $100,000 settlement.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports that a multi-county insurance pool agreed last summer to the settlement with James McCormack.

He was one of many office employees discharged shortly after Voyles took office Dec. 29, but a county commission later ruled on an appeal by McCormack that he was a merit-protected employee.

Merit-protected employees can only be fired for cause.

McCormack filed a $535,000 suit against Voyles and the county, and Executive Director Bill Hardy of the Arizona Counties Insurance Pool says it appeared that settling the case was "the right thing to do."

McCormack now works for the county Public Defender's Office.
