KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Shawnee woman is in critical condition after a bus struck her and dragged her nearly a block in downtown Kansas City Friday morning.

The 68-year-old woman suffered internal injuries, a broken leg and road rash.

A woman walking nearby with a child managed to pound on the bus to alert the driver about the woman underneath the vehicle.

"The only reason he stopped was because someone alerted him," said Sgt. Bill Mahoney of the Kansas City Police Department's traffic investigative unit.

He said the woman was apparently in the driver's blind spot and he didn't see her. He said investigators will examine video from the cameras mounted on the Area Transportation Authority bus.

He said the driver was not impaired.

"It was just a terrible accident," he said.

The woman was walking south at the intersection of 11th Street and Baltimore Avenue when she was struck by the bus, which had just turned left from northbound to travel west on 11th Street toward Wyandotte Avenue.

The bus finally stopped about halfway down the block.

This occurred just before 7 a.m. Friday.

Mahoney said the woman suffered life-threatening injuries.

"We are very concerned," he said.
