Malloy: Feds should pay unemployment for furloughed Sikorsky workers

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The governor is requesting that the federal government pay expenses associated with the 2,000 workers at Sikorsky, who could be forced to take a furlough because of the government shutdown.

United Technologies Corp., which is based in Hartford, said more than 5,000 workers could be furloughed in the coming month if the shutdown continues.

Employees for Sikorsky, which is a division of United Technologies, would be made to take a furlough starting on Monday. If the government shutdown continues, an additional 1,000 employees could be made to take a furlough.

Sikorsky, which makes Black Hawk helicopters, has facilities in Stratford, CT, West Palm Beach, FL and Troy, AL, and employees at all of those plants could be affected.

Gov. Dannel Malloy released a statement, saying the federal government should pay the cost furloughed workers' unemployment benefits.

"These workers and many more throughout Connecticut are out of work because House Republicans insist on playing childish political games. Families are suffering, and it's unacceptable," Malloy said in a statement Friday.

Malloy also said the government should pay for all expenses incurred by the Connecticut Department of Labor for administering the Unemployment Insurance program.

"As many of these workers begin applying for unemployment benefits, it's also unacceptable that Connecticut taxpayers be made to pay for the failures of Republicans in Washington. That's why I'm calling on Congress to ensure that, whenever this unnecessary shutdown is over, the federal government fully reimburses Connecticut - indeed all states - for the cost of unemployment benefits for workers," Malloy said.

Sikorsky said the shutdown has "completely stopped" its "ability to manufacture and support helicopters."

Malloy said he wants the government to also pay the unemployment benefits for any nonprofits that uses federal funding and have since been furloughed because of the government shutdown.

"This manufactured political crisis is harming the United States. It must stop. It's time for Washington to get back to work addressing the challenges confronting this great nation, so I once again call on House Republicans to stop their irresponsible behavior and pass a clean continuing resolution and a clean increase in the debt ceiling," Malloy said.
