A little girl hit by an ice cream truck has died. Police are calling it a tragic accident.
At 5:06 p.m. police were sent to a neighborhood at 108th Terrace and North Harrison Street.
"I was getting ready to go pick my husband up at the airport and had just got down by the garage when I heard somebody scream, 'No!' and heard a loud thud, and I opened the garage and saw the little girl in the street," said neighbor Connie Armstrong.
Armstrong ran to the girl, identified as 8-year old Lillian E.Simon, and tried to help while others performed CPR.
Police said Lillian had been running after an ice cream truck when she somehow got in front of it. The said the driver was pulling up to meet another child when he hit the girl.
"He never saw the little girl. He was looking in his mirrors at the boy that was already running back into the house and came back to get some ice cream," said Chris Petrie with the Kansas City, MO, Police Department.
Armstrong said Lillian was sweet. She liked to play outside and was always friendly to the neighbors.
"She always came here to sell Girl Scout cookies, and she was just a little doll. She would wave at me when she was out on the street or anything," Armstrong said. "I think just about everybody here knew her, because she was just so sweet, she was everybody's friend."
Lillian was originally listed in critical condition, but later died from her injuries at the hospital.
"The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation," according to a statement from the Kansas City Police Department. "At this point, the incident appears to be a tragic accident."
Visitation for Lily will be held Thursday evening. Her funeral will be Friday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a fund in her name at Citizens Bank and Trust, 7553 NW Barry Road, KCMO 64153 or Graceway Bible Translation Fund, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut-Off, KCMO 64133.
Lily was born June 10, 2005, and was adopted from Guangzhou, China. She was active in Girl Scouts and Kansas City Gymnastics. She attended Fox Hill Elementary and Graceway Church. She enjoyed wall ball, cycling and the great outdoors. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Lawrence and Angnes Simon. She is survived by her parents, Ron and Anita Simon, as well as many aunts and uncles.
