Bay City church opens 122-year-old time capsule

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) -

Bay City's First Presbyterian Church members got a bonus sermon when they attended a recent Sunday reception. And it was from one of the church's 19th century pastors.

The Bay City Times reports that the church opened a time capsule that had been placed near its cornerstone in 1891. The contents included newspapers from June of that year, and church artifacts such as the sermon.

Historian and church member Geraldine Higgs says that the capsule provided insight into church history that began with its formation by eight members in the 1850s.

The Rev. Jeffrey Weenink is First Presbyterian pastor. He says the capsule was unearthed during a recent refurbishing project. The church plans to bury another time capsule in November.
