Township seeks to separate itself from Flint zip code

FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A township near Flint is appealing a U.S. Postal Service decision to deny its request for a new mailing address, distinct and separate from the troubled city.

The Flint Journal reports that Grand Blanc Township officials and business boosters filed an appeal that includes more than 200 letters of support.

The township supervisor says businesses pay more for insurance because of the Flint mailing address. The 48507 zip code includes parts of several communities, but all mail sent within it is labeled "Flint."

The city has long struggled with high rates of crime and poverty while the city and township of Grand Blanc are more affluent.
