Long cross-town Cleveland police chase with surprise ending

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A 19 Action News investigation has found another long, cross-town chase by Cleveland Police, but it went nothing like one last fall that turned deadly.

Police recently chased thieves caught in the act stealing an ATM, but the patrol officers finally had to let the crooks get away. The case shows how things have changed on the streets.

A citizen called 911 after he saw thieves stealing an ATM from a store near Fulton and Lorain.

Second District Police scrambled and got there in time to see the bad guys leaving.

But after about 20 minutes officers ended up watching the crooks drive away for good.

Police radio tapes showed officers getting the OK to join in, and the tapes showed officers get frustrated there wasn't more help.

This chase took place in the wee hours of the morning, and it appeared under control but officers say they eventually got a surprise order to stop from a deputy chief at home.

Cleveland Police are still taking heat for a 20 minute chase last November.

That ended as officers killed two people with 137 shots. That chase actually began after officers thought they'd heard a shot and dozens of police cars got involved.

In this case, the store owner where the ATM was stolen tells 19 Action News, he understands why the chase was called off, but he's not happy. He says the ATM had $14,000.

Officers worry thugs will think they can always run away but police bosses are trying to make sure no other chase turns deadly.
