RAVENNA, OH (WOIO) -

A teenager's life lost. She was struck by a train as her SUV sat on the tracks.  A tragedy that's bringing an entire town together.

The vigil for 15-year-old Sierra Thornton had to be moved outside of the Church of the Nazarene on Brady Lake Road in Ravenna Township because there were too many people to fit inside.

One friend remembered Sierra from their church activities together.

"As responsible as Sierra was, she was also crazy and fun and that's what I just loved about her. I'll miss her like crazy," stated the friend.

Sierra was driving with her father and four sisters inside the family SUV Sunday evening when the tragedy occurred.

"They were leaving the residence and she entered the railroad tracks.  Dad heard the train coming. I'm assuming yelled at her there's a train coming. She got into a panic and stopped right on the tracks," said Portage County Sheriff David Doak.

The sheriff said the impact sent the SUV about 75 feet. Sierra died at the scene. Her father and four sister survived, but were rushed to the hospital.

"If you see the damage to that truck and you know where all this happened I'm praising the Lord that there are five survivors of this accident," a Ravenna resident said.

The sheriff said Sierra had just gotten her driver's permit and had only been behind the wheel a few times.
