FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
The construction of a staircase and the precise measurement of some steps will lead you to the front door of what will soon be Carolyn Robison's new home.
Volunteers like Joe Herrmann are almost finished with her new Habitat for Humanity home.
"Oh my God. Thank you, Jesus," said an emotional Robison Monday night.
Herrmann is helping to put the final touches on the project on Ruth Street in Flint. He retired after 30-plus years in the shop.
"Found out that full-time RV'ing is too expensive," laughed Herrmann.
He said that's when he realized that Genesee County's Habitat for Humanity was his true calling. His hands have helped build more than 20 homes.
"I think it's because it's the Christian thing to do," said Herrmann.
He's just one of the countless volunteers that make Habitat a success. Robison's home is the 100th Habitat home built in Genesee County since 1990 and the fourth built on Ruth Street.
"I'm happy because I have a home for my kids and grandkids," said Robison.
It won't take long for Robison to get used to her new neighborhood. One of her neighbors will be her longtime friend Carolyn Tyler. Tyler has lived in her Habitat home for five years.
"It's just a dream come true for all of us over here," said Tyler.
Robison is an in-home care nurse, and Tyler's son is one of her patients. He was injured while serving in the military and is paralyzed.
"Habitat, they give us a chance. They give us a chance, they take a chance on us, and I'm just so happy they have. They take a chance on us," said Tyler.
"I've been crying all day, you know, because I'm just happy about it," said Robison.
Robison will get the keys by early next November. She'll work on paying back the 20-year mortgage on the home at zero interest. As the money is paid back, it will go toward building more Habitat for Humanity homes.
