Neighbors of a Greenwood mother said intervention from Child Protective Services was a long time coming after they found her 4-year-old beaten and bloodied.
Police said the boy claimed his mother whipped him in the face with a belt when a neighbor discovered him crouched on her front porch, asking if he could live with her. He told her his mother said she "didn't want him anymore."
Shelby Briley, 23, was arrested Friday when the neighbors called police. Greenwood police said they found her half asleep and intoxicated. They charged her with unlawful conduct toward a child after finding her son alone while she was at home asleep.
Neighbors said the boy's face and back were bruised.
"The child wasn't even mine and I fell on the ground and just cried," said Ashley Sellars, a neighbor and mother herself.
Neighbors said Briley has a troubled past and that the child was frequently by himself.
The South Carolina Department of Social Services picked the boy up as his mother was being arrested. He is still in DSS's custody.
"We're hoping he gets into a better home with a family that's gonna treat him right," said Sellars.
The police report said officers found 27 Klonopin missing from Briley's prescription bottle when they found her intoxicated; she claimed someone stole them.
FOX Carolina tried to contact the mother, but she did not respond.
