SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Authorities say a state trooper is recovering after being shot in Saginaw in an exchange of gunfire that also left a suspect wounded.
Saginaw police say they were responding to a domestic violence call at a home on Stark Street, which is on Saginaw's west side. When police arrived at the home, the suspect took off. Michigan State Police assisted in the search for the suspect.
A trooper spotted the suspect allegedly trying to break into an abandoned home on Davenport Avenue, between Hanchett and Stark streets. As the trooper approached the suspect, both men exchanged gunfire, and both were hit and rushed to a local hospital.
Police say the trooper, who was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, was briefly hospitalized before being released later Thursday night.
The condition of the suspect wasn't released, but police say he was hospitalized after the shooting.
Michigan State Police Lieutenant Brian Cole said the investigation is ongoing. Late Thursday night, Michigan State Police's Forensic Laboratory truck arrived at the scene.
Davenport Avenue was closed to traffic late Thursday night. It has since reopened.
