School: Student sick with possible infectious disease

Posted: Updated:
FLUSHING, MI (WNEM) -

Parents with students attending an elementary school in Genesee County were informed on Thursday via letter that a student has been hospitalized with a possible infectious disease.

That information was confirmed to WNEM.com by Genesee County Health Officer Mark Valacek.

The student attends Springview Elementary School in Flushing, at 1233 Springview Street.

The student is currently hospitalized with a severe bacterial infection that is being treated with antibiotics.

A second letter was sent to parents on Friday with updates on the situation that states:

Dear Parents:

The Genesee County Health Department has provided an update to the potential health concern reported yesterday at Springview Elementary. We now know as of noon on Friday, October 11, 2013, that it is a severe bacterial infection that is being treated with antibiotics and there is no need for prophylaxis for the other students.

The Genesee County Health Department has advised that children should continue to attend school unless they exhibit symptoms such as a severe sore throat, fever, headache, or swollen glands in the neck. If your child is exhibiting these symptoms, he/she should remain home until your physician or health care provider has approved your child's return to school. The Health Department continues to recommend proper hand washing techniques and coughing/sneezing into a sleeve to help reduce the spread of an illness.

If you have any questions, please contact the Communicable Disease Department of the Genesee County Health Department at (810) 257-1017.

Sincerely,

Timothy Z. Stein

Superintendent
