School closed as district mourns teen killed in crash

TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Millington Junior/Senior High School is closed Monday as students and teachers say farewell to a fellow student killed in a car crash Thursday night.
Deputies were called to the scene of the single-car crash around 8:20 p.m. Thursday on Bray Road near Swaffer Road in Arbela Township.
Tuscola County sheriff's deputies told TV5 17-year-old Laura Massey, who was alone in the vehicle, was killed in the crash. Massey was a senior at Millington High School.
Deputies found that a vehicle had been Southbound on Bray Road and for an unknown reason, left the roadway and struck a mailbox and then trees.
The sheriff's department said there were no witness's to the crash and that a passerby came upon the accident and called 911.

Friday afternoon, Superintendent John Males announced that the Millington Junior Senior High School would not be in session on Monday, Oct. 21, so that students and faculty can attend funeral services for Massey.
"Staff and students have been impacted by this tragic event," said Males in a statement. "This is a great loss to the community and school environment as Laura was a caring and academically talented student. She was an excellent member of the Class of 2014 and per positive impact on her fellow students and those who came in contact with her will be greatly missed."
Her funeral is at 11 a.m. at the Millington Church of God.
