Man tries to lure children with candy in Wolcott

Posted: Updated:
WOLCOTT, CT (WFSB) -

Wolcott parents and grandparents were on high alert Monday after a man tried to lure two children into his van by offering them candy over the weekend.

Now police are trying to figure out whether this is the same man who approached a teenage girl in Naugatuck.

Luz Feliciano said she was inside her house Saturday afternoon when her 8-year-old grandson and a friend came running inside. The two boys were out playing when they say a man stopped his blue minivan, got out of the car, held out his hand and offered them candy.

"He could have taken my grandkid," Feliciano said. "I would have lost one of my grandkids."

Wolcott police said when the boys said no, the man got back in the car and headed south on Woodtick Road toward Waterbury, but not before the boys got a pretty good description.

He's described as a white man in his 30s and about 6 feet tall with short brown hair and a beard.

The boys told police he had a thin build with a large stomach and a tattoo on the underside of his wrist.

The incident occurred about a block away from the police station.

"Time to go over it again, especially with Halloween coming up now and that makes it even more scary," said Nikki Soden of Wolcott.

This weekend's report of a suspicious man in a van follows another one earlier this month in nearby Naugatuck.

In that case, police said a man pulled up to a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, offering them candy.

The teens told police the man was middle aged and heavy-set with dark hair. He was driving either a blue or green minivan.

Wolcott's police chief said the department has been in touch with Naugatuck police and are looking to see whether the two cases are connected.

The Wolcott School District reminded parents to talk to their children. They handed out stranger danger information in the school's newsletter.

Wolcott police will have officers patrolling when children go to and get out of school.

And while police investigate, Feliciano said she and others need to be vigilant.

"We're going to have to look for help with all the different towns," Feliciano said. "The mothers, the parents need to tell their kids if anyone offers them candy, just take off running and tell your parents."

No arrests have been made in either incident. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Wolcott Police Department at 203-879-1414 or the Naugatuck Police Department at 203-729-5222.
