TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Police say a man who was hospitalized after his home exploded, has now died.

Doug Shippey was trying to light his stove, when the explosion happened Oct. 1 in Tuscola County. The explosion happened at a home at the corner of Owen and Manke roads, behind Lindy's Sales, near the Quanicassee River in Wisner Township.

Neighbors tell us they smelled propane when they pulled Shippey from the burning home.

Neighbor Tom Kabat said he heard a "whoomp" and pictures fell off a solid brick wall in his own home. He ran outside and people in the street were yelling to call 911. Kabat told TV5 he called 911 for Tuscola County dispatch.

Kabat said cries were coming from inside the home and that Shippey was alive. Kabat said an unknown man wearing either a white or gray T-shirt ran into the home and got Shippey out. Kabat said it is a year-round home, not a cottage.

Kabat continued by stating that Shippey had cuts on his face and his arms were burned. A helicopter was called into the location to transport Shippey to Hurley Medical Center in Flint.

Kabat said the house was smoking and it was flattened and destroyed. Tuscola County Undersheriff Glen Skrent said initial reports indicated the man was cooking when the explosion happened.

Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
