Man, teen stepson dead after witnesses say they shot each other

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office are investigating a double homicide that resulted in the death of a man and his 16-year-old stepson.

About 20 minutes after midnight Thursday, deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 160 block of Pine Circle Drive.

When they arrived on scene, deputies found James Bernard Soles and his stepson Gregory Javon McKinnies with apparent gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to officials, Soles was still alive at the time and told deputies McKinnies shot him. Witnesses also told authorities the two men shot each other during an argument.

McKinnies, who was shot in the chest several times with an assault rifle, was pronounced dead when he was taken to a hospital in Loris, SC by a car.

Soles, who was shot with a handgun, was taken to Loris in an ambulance and died shortly afterwards.
