Just say "no" to shopping on Thanksgiving Day? Some people are hoping retailers get that message.
SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
There's Black Friday and Cyber Monday - but what do we call shopping on Thanksgiving Day?
Several stores plan to be open on Thanksgiving this year, and a lot of folks aren't happy about it. Now petitions are popping up online in hopes of getting stores to reconsider opening on the holiday.
"Everybody was out so much earlier and it just kind of took away from it I think," lamented Leanne Sugden, who spoke with TV5 about her Black Friday shopping experience last year. She says it just wasn't the same because so many stores had already opened on Thanksgiving. "We probably wouldn't do it anymore," said Sugden.
More and more businesses are trading in turkey for green by opening on Thanksgiving to take advantage of the big holiday retail season.
Some folks are just fine with that.
"If people want to go shopping, they should be able to shop anytime they want," said one Saginaw County resident.
"I think it's a good thing, you know, people get out and do some shopping," said a Saginaw resident.
Most shoppers TV5 talked to in Kochville Township say they're against stores being open on Thanksgiving.
"I wish they weren't. It's a holiday. I think they should be at home with their families," said one Kochville Township resident.
"They should get to stay home and enjoy dinner with everybody else," said another person about the workers being made to punch in on the holiday.
"I would prefer that they waited until midnight or the next morning," explained another Kochville Township resident.
"I think it's ridiculous," continued another. "I think families should have the opportunity to be at home with their families."
There's even a Facebook page dedicated to protesting store openings on turkey day. The goal of the page is to allow employees to stay home for the holiday.
The major retailers set to open on Thanksgiving Day include Macy's, JC Penny's, Target, Kohl's and Toys R Us.
