SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man accused of killing a local business owner has taken a plea deal. Anthony Clapper, 36, agreed to second degree murder charges in the death of James Owens.

Owens' body was found near his home in Bridgeport Township June 12. An employee of the excavating company behind the home found the man unresponsive. The man was later declared dead by police.

Police say Clapper killed the 77-year-old man with a cutting instrument during a robbery attempt. Clapper is also accused of stealing Owens' car.

Owens owned 25 properties in Saginaw County, including Owen's Contracting Services.

Friends and family say Owens never hesitated to help someone. They say Owens even helped the man who's accused of killing him.

"There's no sense in it, it's a senseless killing for a good guy," said Scott Jacques, an employee of the victim.
