JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
Halloween treats can take a toll on pearly whites. That's why Dr. Thomas Dudney tells his patients to stay away from the ones that could do the most damage to your teeth.
"Anything really sticky is what we tend to stay away from. Caramel is a good example of something that's very sticky. It's good but it's something that sticks to the tooth and it's harder to brush," Dudney said.
Taffy is another sticky treat he says you may want to pass on. Meanwhile, sour gummies won't stick to your teeth as much, however, the sour and sweet combo are a concern for Dudney.
"I'd say that's kind of a double whammy, and I'd say that's something you would want to stay away from it simply because of the sugar combined with the acidity," Dudney added.
Hard candy like lollipops aren't as bad according to Dudney as long as there's no chewing involved. He says gum is okay but only if it's sugar free and not the large round kind with a hard, sugar shell.
Chocolate lovers will be happy to hear Dudney not only gave it the green light but it's also the candy he gives to trick-or-treaters who knock on his door.
"Reese's cups, a Hershey's bar, or chocolate. Those are easier to take off teeth," Dudney said.
For those who don't want to eliminate any treats that come their way, Dudney says that's okay too. He says that any night of the year, it's best to limit your candy intake to once piece a night.
"That's where we see tooth break down, enamel break down and cavities," Dudney said.
For those with little ones at home, Dudney recommends supervising them as they brush their teeth on Halloween night. He says to make sure they do a thorough job of brushing off all of the candy.
