Northwestern DA honored for drug removal program

Posted: Updated:

Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan is one of four state DAs being honored for working to keep drugs from polluting the environment.

Covanta Energy Systems honored Sullivan and others for getting unwanted drugs out of homes so they don't get thrown out and cause pollution.

The company works to keep drugs from getting into water systems and contaminating the environment.

DA Sullivan was recognized at Covanta's Western Mass headquarters on Wednesday.

"We just wanted to thank the DA, DEP, and others for helping us remove over 1 million pounds of unwanted prescription medications," said Kenneth Ryan, business manager for Covanta Energy Systems

In the district attorney's office alone, more than seven tons, or 14,000 pounds of drugs have been destroyed.

That's Hampshire and Franklin counties and the Town of Athol.

DA Sullivan said he is honored and proud of his office and is happy to work with Covanta Energy.
