CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR -
(WMC-TV) - According to National Weather Service preliminary reports, the storm that swept through Caraway, Ark., Thursday night was an EF 1 tornado.
EF 1 tornados bring winds between 90 and 100 miles per hour. NWS is still analyzing data gathered during the Halloween storm that destroyed at least five structures and damaged 10.
Caraway, Arkansas is about 40 minutes east of Jonesboro in Craighead County.
Action News 5 cameras captured the damage Thursday night. Toppled trees, downed power lines, twisted and mangled metal, and other littered yards and roadways.
When the storm hit, many people out trick-or-treating did not have much warning to take shelter. No one was killed or seriously injured.
"We walked in, we poured out the candy on the floor, all of a sudden the lights flickered, the power went off, we heard the whoosh sound and then everything was gone," explained Mary Clayton.
"We just had a fence lost, that was all I had," said Bobby Boone, a volunteer with Caraway Fire Department.
Boone and several others went house to house with chainsaws and other equipment, working to clear roadways and help people.
"It was like the wind was just trying to pick everything up, it was like a big roar," added Boone.
Riverside Public Schools in Caraway canceled classes Friday.
Red Cross volunteers, along with Baptist Relief Services, scattered throughout town to hand out meals and water.
The Halloween storm did not tear down the spirit of the community. Neighbors are helping neighbors in need.
"Everybody that's coming out today to help out, it just shows how close everybody is," said Boone.
