The Detroit Tigers have agreed to hire Brad Ausmus to be the team's new manager, according to multiple reports. Adam Spolane of SportsRadio 610 reported that Ausmus is expected to finalize an agreement on Sunday in Detroit.

Later Saturday evening, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports confirmed Spolane's report.

Ausmus has no prior managerial experience but has been part of the San Diego Padres organization since shortly after his retirement in 2010. He became a hot candidate for openings this offseason, as Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported the Nationals previously reached out to Ausmus about their opening.

At 44 years old, Ausmus will bring a fresh managerial voice to the locker room following th resignation of 68-year-old Jim Leyland. The Tigers enjoyed enormous success in Leyland's eight years with the club, winning two American League pennants and three AL Central division titles, giving Ausmus some big shoes to fill.

Expectations will be high from the get-go as the Tigers possess one of the most talented teams in baseball. Boasting sluggers like Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder along with starting pitchers like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez gives Ausmus a chance to succeed right away in 2014.

Ausmus is the latest former player to join the MLB managerial ranks without previous managerial experience, joining others like Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals and Walt Weiss of the Colorado Rockies.

Ausmus played 18 MLB seasons with four teams, establishing a reputation as a cerebral catcher during his tenure as a player. You could hardly ask for a better starting manager's gig than the one Ausmus just got, so he will be under pressure to win from the beginning.
