Lawmaker hopes to make ticket scalping legal

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

We all know that if you try to sell your concert or sporting event tickets to make a profit, you could end up in jail.

Representative Tim Kelly of Saginaw Township is hoping to change that by making it legal to scalp tickets above face value.

That lawmaker believes someone should be able to turn a profit when selling those tickets, so he introduced legislation last week to make it legal to sell above face value.

Craig Goslin is president of the Saginaw Spirit. He says tickets are given a certain value for a reason.

"Franchises set those prices on their markets and fans should be able to pay face value for those tickets and not have somebody capitalize on fans desire to see a game," says Goslin.

Some say if someone is willing to fork over the cash, why not let them do it legally?

"With the Red Sox Worlds Series games, the tickets were going for like 12,000 dollars to get in there, if people are willing to pay, go ahead and pay it."

Kelly says there's no reason for the government to interfere in a transaction between a willing buyer and willing seller.

The legislation now goes to a house committee for consideration.
