Students bring knife, bb pellets to Richmond middle school

Posted: Updated:

Richmond school officials are trying to figure out how students managed to get a knife and ammunition past security, at Martin Luther King Middle School. The items were discovered on two students, prompting many to ask what went wrong, since the school has metal detectors and security guards.

The discovery last Wednesday has been unnerving to many people. Felicia Cosby, a spokesperson for Richmond School District, says a teacher discovered a student carrying BB gun pellets to class. A pocket knife is then uncovered on a friend.

MLK has three metal detectors and five security officers. Parents and students tell NBC12 that usually feel safe.

"First we put our bags on the table, then walk through the metal detector…. (if it beeps) they check us down, just in case," described Elizabeth Salinas, a student at MLK.

However, some teachers are expressing concern to school board members.

"We have a concern for safety and our staff in that building," Shonda Harris-Muhammed, a Richmond School Board member.

Cosby says the principal asked parents to warn children about consequences of bringing contraband to school. School officials say equipment and procedures are being revaluated.

"We are looking at our security equipment. We're looking at the sensitivity levels, making sure that they are indeed high enough," continued Cosby.

"Are we doing a spot check? Are we doing a thorough check? What type of check are we doing?" questioned Harris-Muhammed.

"I think an assumption is the students went through the metal detectors," pointed out Cosby.

The two students are suspended, for now. School administrators tell me they're exploring all possibilities as to how the contraband got past security measures.
