CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Clare County Sheriff's office said deputies were called in to help the DNR during a pursuit on Saturday that ended with one man being taken into custody.

On Nov. 2 around 7:30 p.m., deputies said the pursuit was initiated by a DNR conservation officer on Clare Ave. near the north County Line. The pursuit lasted for approximately 20 minutes and covered about 15 miles.

Authorities said the suspect reached excessive speeds during his attempt to avoid law enforcement. Deputies said the man drove recklessly through several subdivision areas and through the city of Harrison. At one point during the pursuit, police said he even drove his vehicle head-on at the DNR officer and forced him off the roadway to avoid capture.

Sheriff's deputies deployed stop sticks at Clare Ave. and Stockwell Road, which they said helped to reduce the speeds during the pursuit. The chase ended on M-61 and Sellinger Street in Harrison when the suspect came to a stop after his vehicle became inoperable.

The 54-year-old Harrison man, whom police later identified following arraignment as Robert Leathers, was taken into custody and lodged at the Clare County Jail.

Also in the vehicle during the pursuit was the suspect's 46-year-old wife. She was released without incident and transported to a residence by deputies.

On Tuesday, Leathers was arraigned in 80th District Court on the following charges: Flee and elude, assault/resist/obstruct a police officer, and operating while intoxicated/impaired, 2nd offense.

Leathers was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond and is due back in court on Nov. 18.
