Elderly couple celebrating birthday dead in Dinwiddie house fire

Posted: Updated:
DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) -

Family and friends are remembering a Dinwiddie elderly couple known as George and Maude. The couple died in a house fire along Cox Road. George Leucht was celebrating his 84th birthday.

We spoke to the woman who tried to rescue them, but she says the flames were too much.

It took crews about two hours to battle the blaze. George Leucht died on his 84th birthday. Local officials are working with Virginia State Police to figure out how the fire started.

"It's bad," said family friend Sonny Cairnes. "I feel terrible about it."

Cairnes says the family pets also died in the blaze. Neighbor Sherri Davis says she did her best to alert the elderly couple.

"I tried to get them out," said Davis. "The front door was open, but the front porch was engulfed."

Davis says she immediately started screaming.

"I kept banging on the windows and screaming for them," said Davis.

Officials say the home has extensive damage. Fire crews note there are no municipal hydrants in the area. Firefighters were forced to shuttle water from 3 miles away.

"It's just unfortunate," said Fire Chief Dennis Hale. "We weren't fast enough. We take it just like the family will sometimes. We don't like responding to these whether they elderly or not."

Family members say they are still in shock.

"Not today of all days," said Barbara Leucht. "We are all coping right now. We are all pretty much in shock."

The medical examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death.
