Another Valley police officer is on the brink of losing his job. He's accused of sleeping too close to the enemy.

CBS 5 News was the first to report a Tempe officer who carried on an affair with a suspected drug dealer she was investigating.

Now it's a Phoenix police detective, working a very high-profile case.

The detective's troubles stem from two reported extramarital affairs. The department is not taking a moral stand, but it is who the detective chose to sleep with and how he handled himself that has him facing termination and criminal charges.

Phoenix police were investigating a crime caught by jail surveillance cameras that sparked a nationwide manhunt. Last year, career criminal Rocky Marquez escaped from a Maricopa County jail posting as another inmate. When he was captured in Michigan eight months later, he pulled the same stunt again.

Authorities finally tracked down and arrested Marquez in Mexico. He is back behind bars in Phoenix and awaits trial on a list of charges, but CBS 5 News has learned some of those charges could be in jeopardy because of the actions of Phoenix Police Detective Daniel Moncrief, who worked the Marquez case.

Several independent sources have confirmed for CBS 5 News that Moncrief is under internal investigation for getting sexually involved with a potential witness in the Marquez case. Moncrief allegedly met the woman while investigating Marquez. She is reportedly a close associate of Marquez's girlfriend, the same girlfriend who was arrested for helping Marquez escape and hide.

The 15-year police veteran is also the subject of a criminal investigation for a completely unrelated incident. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office accuses Moncrief of felony trespassing.

According to the report, it was about midnight on a Saturday in September when Moncrief broke into the apartment of a woman he had been having an on and off affair with for three years. The woman was not home but her adult daughter was in her bed. The daughter told police she was afraid.

Moncrief ran out of the apartment and took off, but two days later, Moncrief showed up at the school where his sometimes love works. Witnesses told deputies they saw fear in their co-worker's eyes when she saw Moncrief. Moncrief reportedly tried to pressure the woman into not reporting the break-in, saying he was already in trouble with the police department and he could lose his job.

Within a few days, the woman filed an injunction against Moncrief claiming harassment. Moncrief was placed on paid leave.

CBS 5 News tried to reach Moncrief through his attorney and the police union.

The county attorney's office is reviewing the trespassing case against him for possible charges. As for how his involvement with the potential witness will effect the Marquez prosecution, the county attorney's office said it would not talk about an on going case.

CBS 5 News has learned that Phoenix police have started the process to terminate Moncrief.
