Youth football coaches cry foul over brawl disqualification

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A fight breaks out after a youth football game in Henrico. It was all caught on camera, but coaches are crying foul. They say the other team started it, and the punishment is too severe.

The local team involved has now been disqualified from both the state and national titles.

The game was over. The RichCity Spiders won 23-7. They were shaking hands with members of the opposing team when someone on the losing team appears to throw a punch. That set off a brawl that ultimately ended the RichCity Spiders journey to the national championship in Florida.

"It just hurts me that those kids put in so much effort," said team president Linwood Johnson. "We never had an issue. They have never been in any trouble."

The team's long journey was all over after coaches and parents rushed the field.

"Seems like they just handed us the book on our first offense," said Johnson.

We reached out to Virginia AAU officials. They directed us to the national office for comment. They also suggested parents should have never rushed the field and that police reports were filed as a result of the incident.

"I don't feel as coaches we can be responsible for the people on the sidelines," said staff coach Shawn Spence. "You don't get to pick and choose who comes to the games."

The team appealed the disqualification, but the AAU Review Committee upheld the original season-ending decision. The RichCity Spiders had a 9-1 run this season.

"It's just a bad feeling that I have for my kids," said Johnson.

14-year-old Jaden Edwards is devastated.

"I felt upset," said Edwards.

The state finals are this Saturday. We have left messages with the national office. Stay with NBC 12 for updates.
